330 new Residential Units for Akuna Street
Developers of a new $60.38 million, 18-storey apartment project say it will bring 500 new residents into Civic, reinvigorating a section of Canberra’s central business district.
Across the road from the Canberra Centre shopping mall and Glebe Park, the 330-unit Akuna Street Residence will be close to eight major office blocks housing 15,000 workers.
It is targeted at live-in professional couples and investors, with mostly one and two-bedroom units, with some three-bedroom units on a penthouse level. Canberra-based Amalgamated Property Group, which built the 342-unit Metropolitan apartments in City West and the nearby 188-unit Glebe Park Residences, will demolish vacant office blocks in Akuna Street, previously leased by the Australian Tax Office, to make way for the development.
A basement and two upper levels will provide car parking for 486 vehicles and 358 bikes. On the ground floor a hotel style set-down and main entry lobby will be located on Bunda Street. The third-level podium will be extensively landscaped with deep-rooted planter beds for a mature garden. The U-shaped tower with a curved glazed facade will face Glebe Park.
