Capital Projects

Canberra CBD Limited would like to leave a lasting legacy in the City along with some temporary improvements such as flowering baskets, fairy lights in trees and cleaning. So the company has embarked on a number of larger capital projects, the first major one of which was the refurbishment of West Row Park, completed in 2010.

Our most exciting project for 2011 was Skate in the City, our Winter Festival in Garema Place. This project is continuing again in 2012 and will run from 29 June to 29 July.

For further information on Canberra CBD Limited’s various projects over the past 12 months, please refer to our Annual Report 2011.

Caged Bin Enclosures

The bin enclosures would be similar to those erected in Hobart Place and are designed to centralise garbage collection services and provide a cleaner solution for many of the City’s laneways. Stage one of this project has been to develop the concept, identify the locations, preliminary costs, Government requirements and commitment from the property owners to proceed.

Four locations have been determined for the initial roll out:

  • Tocumwal Lane behind Centrepoint, joining Bunda Street with Petrie Plaza
  • Baileys Corner Service courtyard
  • Riverside Lane accessed off Ainslie Place
  • Hillside Lane accessed off Akuna Street

Riverside Lane and Hillside Lanes were the first areas to be constructed with the help of David Clarke Architects along with the ACT Government.  We are currently working with the tenants and the waste service provider to iron out the final details.

Ros Malouf of ACT NoWaste has also been involved in the consultation process conducting an audit of the waste procedures in Riverside Lane to determine that the number of bins required will be reduced from 10 to 3.  Ros will continue to liaise with all parties as part of the ACTSmart Office/Business program with all of the tenants in the buildings.

Along with the Caged Bin enclosures Canberra CBD Limited are continually planning further murals.  In addition to our works in Braddon in 2010, we are working with local artist Lisa Twomey to realise her creation for the external all of Pink Inc in Lonsdale Street.  Click here for a preview.

Melbourne Building Refurbishment
The company has been working gradually over the past 3 years to improve the appearance and surrounds of the historic Melbourne Building.  It looks like 2011/12 will see this project finally come to fruition after a long consultation process with the various property owners and the Department of Land & Property Services.  More details will be available in the coming months.
