Beautifying the City

A large proportion of the Canberra CBD Limited budget is spent on City Improvements. Some are more temporary in nature such as murals, Christmas lighting and flowers. Other projects are large scale capital projects such as refurbishing West Row Park.

Murals

If you have not already seen the below makeover, next time you are in the City Centre make sure you take a walk around Bunda Street to near Gus’ café and you will see what talented artists can do for the City Centre. Murals/ Beautifying the CityCanberra CBD has engaged artists to produce two murals for walls in the City. Bunda Street is a very busy area and in April a spectacular cafe scene was painted in the area next to Gus’ Cafe.

The Saraton building along the laneway from City Walk (adjoining East Row), a favourite place for the graffiti taggers, has been transformed into a contemporary jungle and has become a talking point for the right reasons with City users. This work is already completed and worth a visit.

Flowers

Each Year Canberra CBD Limited contracts the Planter People to festoon the City with flowers. There are 350 locations (1300 baskets) from Hobart Place, along Northbourne Avenue through City Walk, Petrie Plaza and Ainslie Avenue. The flowers are installed early November and stay in place until after the Canberra Festival in March.

The public love this addition to the City and following email is an example of comments we have received:

“You mentioned your plans to beautify the CBD and I keep meaning to send this note telling you what a great job you are doing. The flower baskets are sensational.

Congratulations on the wonderful addition of flower planters to the inner city areas in Canberra. What a breath of fresh air it is to see these wonderful colours everywhere”.

Christmas Lights

The Christmas lights add sparkle to the trees in the City and help to bring the Christmas atmosphere to the streets. The first year (2008) the lights were installed in the trees along City Walk. In 2009 the trees along Ainslie Avenue and both ends of Petrie Plaza will receive a similar treatment.

Christmas LightsEvery subsequent year more areas of the City will be lit with City West next and Lonsdale and Mort Streets in Braddon the year after.

These projects have received unsolicited comments from the public such as:

“Personal congratulations to you and your team. From conversation with other colleagues and friends, I think my comment is the tip of the iceberg in terms of accolades. Yes, I had noticed the enhancements to the Sydney and Melbourne buildings – it does make a difference. At a time when hot and dry conditions have otherwise presented a bedraggled environment, your flowers and cleaning (and the fairy lights) have provided the perfect complement to our new and expanded retail developments and made Civic a much better place to work and shop in”.
