Greening the City
Green Building Fund
The Green Building Fund aims to reduce the impact of Australia’s built environment on green house gas emissions by reducing the energy consumed in the operation of commercial office buildings.
The program will provide $90 million in grants from 2008-09 to 2011-12. The funding targets the owners of existing commercial office buildings. It supports retro-fitting and retro-commissioning of these buildings, to reduce base building energy consumption.
Grants ranging from $50,000 to $500,000 are available for up to 50% of project costs.
Federal Minister for Industry, Kim Carr, announced 89 projects worth $29.5 million as part of the first round of the Green Building Fund. According to Federal Government figures, this first round of grant funding will directly reduce green house gas emissions by almost 65,000 tonnes every year.
Funds from this program will be used to:
- Upgrade heating, ventilating and air conditioning (new chillers, variable speed drives etc)
- Install or replace building management systems
- Install wind turbines and solar panels
- Replace glazing
- Replace base building lighting
- Install external shading
