What do curry and ice have in common? Aside from polar opposites on the heat scale, not much, but from an events perspective that’s another story!
As in previous years, Canberra’s CBD was abuzz with local and visiting community interest during the months of June-July, as crowds flocked to attend In The City Canberra’s (ITCC’s) annual events – Skate in Garema Place, and World Curry Festival.
Thanks to ongoing sponsorship from ITCC, Skate in Garema Place returned for its fifth year, and with record crowds of 25,000 people attending over 23 June-16 July, is true testament to the adage things get better with age. In 2017 planners added a new layer of sophistication to the event, with the addition of a roof, five-metre toboggan slide and Kangaroo pushers allowing parents to push their kids across the ice.
Similarly, public interest and attendance at ITCC’s annual World Curry Festival also soared, with 50,000 plus people pouring into the CBD to sample some of the worlds’ hottest (and most delicious!) curries. While the festival may be in its infancy (relative to the longevity of Skate in Garema Place), at just three years of age this event has already asserted its presence on the local stage as one of the Capital’s most popular annual iconic events, right up there with Floriade and Enlighten.
The value these events bring to local CBD traders must also be acknowledged, in light of their contribution to local business investment and similarly, growing Canberra’s economy and profile as a diverse city of community, culture and fun!
