The inaugural Design Canberra Festival was a great success.
It was great to see the activation of empty spaces throughout the City centre through the ACTivate event.
The concept of activating spaces during the Design Canberra Festival is similar to Renew Australia which started in Newcastle in 2008. Now there are over 150 empty buildings occupied on a temporary arrangement with low-cost creative activation. There are also over 70 new businesses that have commenced and Lonely Planet hails Newcastle as one of the top ten cities in the world to visit due to the exciting creative community. Closer to home, a couple of weeks ago Cooma launched their program to activate empty shops at street level.
