Art in the City
There is a diverse collection of public artwork to be found in the City centre, commissioned by the ACT and Australian Governments and the business and community sectors.
To complement Canberra’s urban design and provide new experiences of the everyday environment, the ACT Government’s Public Art Program was established in 1995. The Program undertakes a range of activities including planning, commissioning new works, maintenance and education.
The most recent additions to the City’s public art include sculptures at the Akuna/Bunda Street entrance to Glebe Park, and David Jensz’ ‘Life Cycle’ on Petrie Plaza, at the Bunda Street verge.

A notable development in Canberra’s art scene in recent years has been the work undertaken by the Molonglo Group to commission some great Australian artists to design work of varying mediums which is on display around their New Acton precinct in the City’s West. See some of the work on their website.
The Canberra Museum and Gallery provides a fantastic showcase for local artists. More information can be found on our Exhibitions in the
City page.
