Canberra Theatre Centre
Canberra Theatre Centre is Canberra’s premier performing arts venue, providing world class performing arts and entertainment to the people of Canberra and surrounding regions.
Canberra Theatre Centre includes the 1,244 seat Canberra Theatre, The Playhouse seating 618 and The Courtyard Studio, an intimate rehearsal and performance space that seats up to 90 patrons.
Located centrally in Civic Square, Canberra Theatre Centre is the focal point for performing arts in Canberra and is often considered the heart of the city. The Canberra Theatre was opened in 1965 and The Playhouse was rebuilt and opened again in 1998 with a gala concert.
This was the first subsidized performing Arts Centre in Australia when it was opened in 1965.
The theatre presents a solid and constantly evolving program of performances encompassing plays, concerts, comedy, dance and youth and children’s events. See the current program of what’s on here.
The Street Theatre
The Street Theatre is a multidisciplinary performance “idea house” with a program created by professional and independent artists.
The goal is to inspire engagement and generosity amongst artists as well as audience. There is a commitment to support bold new ideas, hybrid art-form practices and engage different cultural communities.
The Street Theatre is a hub for the majority of locally produced theatre. Throughout it’s ten year history a consistent number of around 40 ticketed productions a year have been shown at it’s stage.
