Magistrates Court carpark safe from ACT Light Rail construction compound

As of 1 January 2018, the management of the City Centre Marketing and Improvements Levy transferred from In The City Canberra to the City Renewal Authority. Views expressed in these articles may not reflect the views of the Authority.

Deputy Chief Minister Simon Corbell announced on Tuesday that the Magistrates Court carpark would not be needed for a construction compound for the ACT Light Rail project as initially planned.

The compound will instead be located within the Canberra Olympic Pool carpark, which is already in use for the Constitution Avenue upgrades.

The change of venue comes as a direct result of community consultation between the Capital Metro Agency and key stakeholders in the City, including In the City Canberra.

“Capital Metro Agency has worked closely with key stakeholders, including tenants of the Melbourne and Sydney buildings, and their concerns about the need to maintain the current level of parking at the Magistrates Court car park with minimal disruption have been heard,” Mr Corbell said.

In order to fit the construction compound within the Canberra Olympic Pool carpark, the size of the site will be reduced and an additional site office will be placed within the Canberra Visitor Information Centre site at Dickson.

This is a great outcome for the City, ensuring the least amount of disruption to local traders, workers and visitors to the CBD.
