Maple Bar is kicking it old school

As of 1 January 2018, the management of the City Centre Marketing and Improvements Levy transferred from In The City Canberra to the City Renewal Authority. Views expressed in these articles may not reflect the views of the Authority.

Since Maple Bar (formerly known as upstairs Treehouse) was unveiled last Friday, it’s caused quite a stir amongst Canberrans. Maple Bar has a strict set of house rules, including a ban on men approaching women.

Mike Kadinski, the owner of Treehouse Bar has released a statement to set the record straight:

Don’t let the house rules scare you off! Maple Bar is not taking a stand on feminism, rather we’re about kicking it old school. The bar is a place where both men and women can enjoy a drink and a chat in a more exclusive, elegant area, rather than the middle of a crowded dance floor.

The idea of Maple Bar is to bring a different vibe to Treehouse. The reality is, most of our patrons are Uni students and we often receive feedback from our older, suit wearing patrons, that they love Treehouse but need a place to retreat to. A place where they can enjoy a cocktail and conversation in a relaxed setting. Hence, Maple Bar was born!

We want to welcome everyone to Maple Bar however, entry to the bar comes only with adherence to the semi-formal dress code and house rules.

Yes, the rules and dress code are subjective, if you don’t read them the way they are intended to be read. They should be read and understood with an old school point of view, rather than a 2017 equal rights point of view. To avoid confusion, our patrons will be met by our hostess Madi, who is there to encourage the dress code and ensure our patrons are adhering to the house rules.

The dress code is about elegance, it’s not really something that can be explained by saying, it’s this or, it’s that. And that’s why we have Madi. She has been trained with the knowledge and understanding of what Treehouse is looking for. We really want to bring some class back to Canberra. It’s disappointing that so many ladies put so much time and effort in to getting dressed up, only to be met by a  guy who thinks it’s okay to put a t-shirt on with a pair of thongs.

So before you make judgement, we invite you to come along and enjoy a night at Maple Bar!

You can find Maple Bar upstairs above Treehouse, in the Sydney Building at 32 Northbourne Avenue, Canberra City.
