City Improvements

West Row Park

Work is progressing well on West Row Park with completion due mid-April. One of the features of the pavement in the park is two circles of crushed CD's.  Canberra CBD Limited asked for donations of old CD's and were amazed with the response, two wheelie bins of CD's were collected in our office.

Riverside Lane

Murals on the walls of nine buildings in Riverside Lane have been completed and we have received many positive comments, particularly from residents of City Walk Apartments who back onto the Lane.

DA’s are also with ACTPLA for a caged bin enclosure for Riverside Lane and Hillside Lane. Already we have reduced the number of rubbish hoppers behind Riverside Lane from 11 to 3 by working with the Business Smart people on ways to reduce waste and recycling.

 Banners

Canberra CBD Limited has been working with Roads ACT to increase the number of banner holders attached to light poles in the City - I hope you like the new look ‘Winter in the City’ banners and the brighter atmosphere created by the additional streets.

Bunda Street Upgrade

As part of a series of works to upgrade the city centre Territory & Municipal Services has commenced contruction on the Bunda Street Refurbishment and Streetscape Project.  The upgrade works will be from Mort Street to Petrie Street & will continue for approximately 6 months (finalising October 2010). Included in the construction is replacement of the paving, new lighting, street furniture and artworks.  Footpath levels will be improved for safety, in some areas and there will be some minor changes to parking arrangements and the taxi area.  Work is being undertaken by Urban Contractors.

Sydney & Melbourne Building Forum

A forum is planned for the property owners of these buildings early in May to discuss the Study that Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Pty Ltd conducted regarding a vision for the future of these icons. In particular for the Melbourne building Canberra CBD Limited is working with the ACT Government on how to turn the back service area of this building into a Cafe style laneway similar to those in Melbourne.

The ACT Government has also engaged HBO&EMTB to provide designs for the external public areas around the buildings and the preliminary work on these will also be presented.

Bonjour Canberra

‘Groovin in the City’ was very successful again this year entertaining the lunch time crowds with bands, singers dancers and some fantastic wandering buskers. The entertainment program is a partnership between Canberra CBD Limited and the Chief Minister’s Department.

We had a number of special weeks this year with the highlight being ‘Bonjour Canberra’ in which we introduced another partner to the program, the National Gallery of Australia. The entertainment during the week featured an Edith Piaf lookalike, Can Can dancers, French sidewalk painting and even French cooking accompanied with wine tasting. Of course the week also promoted the exhibition, Masterpieces of Paris and many of the City’s business dressed up their shop windows to get into the theme.

Canberra Festival

Festival activities have for a number of years always centred around Commonwealth Park and the lake however the 2010 celebrations included events in the City.

Flipart

Canberra CBD Limited also worked with the Centenary of Canberra team to present ‘Flipart', a celebration of circus, aerial, street and physical theatre showcasing the work of visiting Australian and international artists as well as local talent. The program animated the inner city area featuring ‘Stalker’ an explosive outdoor work fusing hip-hop and breakdance with stilt acrobats and a five metre-high catapult plus the giant puppetry of ‘Erth’.

Garema Place was the location for ‘Dislocate’, acrobatic aerial theatre and Civic Square hosted Ethiopian acrobats ‘The Zimboyz’ with their gravity defying performances.

Australian Institute of Criminology

The impact of policing strategies in and around licensed premises
The Australian Institute of Criminology (AIO), in partnership with ACT Policing, is undertaking research into the impact of policing strategies in and around licensed premises.
They are surveying community members and local businesses’ views on Canberra’s entertainment precincts to assess perceptions of safety and gather information on patron experiences in different types of licensed premises. The survey is anonymous and can be accessed via the AIC website at www.aic.gov.au. It should take about 15 minutes to complete. The survey closes on 16 April.
For more information contact the AIC on 6260 9200 or aic.survey@aic.gov.au
